This Won’t Make Me Any Friends, But Schools Should Start the Day with the Pledge of Allegiance!

The Pledge of Allegiance has been a long-standing tradition in American schools, yet in recent years, many institutions have chosen to remove or downplay its significance. While this opinion may not be popular with everyone, I firmly believe that schools should start each day with the Pledge of Allegiance.

First and foremost, the Pledge fosters a sense of unity and national pride. In a world that often feels divided, standing together each morning to recite words that emphasize liberty and justice helps instill a common identity among students. It reminds them that, despite differences in background or beliefs, they are all part of something greater—the United States of America.

Additionally, the Pledge serves as a moment of reflection and respect. Just as many schools encourage moments of silence or mindfulness, the Pledge provides a brief opportunity for students to acknowledge the values of democracy, freedom, and responsibility. It is not about blind patriotism but rather about appreciating the rights and opportunities that come with being a citizen of this country.

Some may argue that requiring the Pledge infringes on personal freedoms, and that is a valid concern. However, participation should always be a choice. No student should be forced to recite it, but offering it as a daily tradition can reinforce civic awareness and respect for the nation’s history.

At a time when patriotism is sometimes viewed with skepticism, reinstating the Pledge of Allegiance in schools could serve as a small yet meaningful step toward fostering a stronger, more united generation. While this stance may not win me many friends, I believe it is a conversation worth having.
