An image circulating widely on social media has left viewers stunned: a man’s tongue appears to be covered in thick, dark hair. At first glance, it looks like a bizarre Photoshop edit—but medical experts confirm it’s actually a real and rare condition known as Black Hairy Tongue.
This strange disorder occurs when the tiny projections on the tongue, called papillae, grow longer than usual and don’t shed properly. These elongated papillae can trap food, bacteria, tobacco, and dead cells, leading to a discolored, hairy appearance. Smoking, poor oral hygiene, excessive coffee or tea intake, and some antibiotics are known triggers.
